The participants visited the following
sites:
Visit to Mrs Ben pig project:
Mrs Ben Piggery project which drives
its name from Mr Ben of Bostwana is an initiative
of the Kalundu School Anti-AIDS Club in response to
the challenges of the increasing number of orphans
at the school. The achievements and challenges facing
the club were highlighted.
Lessons learnt by the participants
from the Mrs Ben project:
- Children in the rural areas with very little for
themselves can still think about others (orphans)
- Real team work; clearly noted during demonstrations
on how to feed and manage the pig project despite
the high poverty levels in the Southern province.
It was evident that it was only through hard work
and co-operation that the club was able to sustain
the project
- The goal can be achieved through hard work and
that a project can be started without any money
but through tapping of local resources
- Income Generating Activities (IGAs) do not necessarily
require expensive structures or a lot of money to
start
- Community involvement in any project helps in
sustaining a project, example involvement of Parent
Teachers Association (PTA) members and local leadership
- When young people are involved in survival skills,
they are helped to be self reliant even when they
leave school.
