In 2003, ZNAN was selected to be one of the four Principle Recipients (PR) of the Global Fund to fight Against AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GFATM).  Under this facility, three grants were signed to fight HIV and AIDS and Tuberculosis.

The first two grant under the Round one funding cycle were for the period June 2003 to July 2008. A total of USD 26m was approved and the areas supported were prevention and mitigation of social–economic impact of HIV, AIDS and community awareness programmes on Tuberculosis

A second grant amounting to USD 4.8m was approved under the Round four phase one funding cycle to run from June 2005 to July 2007. The areas supported under this grant were the provision of Anti Retroviral Treatment (ART), treatment of Opportunistic Infections (OIs); provision of nutritional supplements to People living with AIDS (PLWA) and support to care givers.

Currently ZNAN is negotiating a grant, amounting to USD 30m as an extension into Phase two of Round four for the period 2008 – 2010.  The areas to be supported under this extension will be the same in phase one (mainly scaling up of ART provision)

According to the National HIV and AIDS Strategic Framework (NASF) 2006 – 2010, there is need to intensify prevention and expand treatment care and support activities. However, Round one funding of the GFATM to ZNAN came to an end 2008 and the Round four does not support the whole spectrum of universal access to prevention; treatment; and care and support.

The consequences are that as from July 2008, ZNAN will only be receiving funding from the GFATM to adequately support the provision of ART and partially support the care and support activities (nutrition and support to care givers. It will, however, be unable to support prevention activities such as prevention of sexual transmission of HIV with special emphasis on youths women and high risk behaviour groups; mitigate stigma and discrimination against HIV and to improve access to and use of confidential counselling and testing.

In addition care and support activities such as to protect and provide support to orphans and vulnerable children (OVCs), to provide social protection for people made vulnerable from the effects of HIV and AIDS will not be supported.
